A boot always has its own shape from the factory: This is determined by the last. Basically, a last is a wooden or plastic model of a foot. The boot is built around these lasts and as a result, the boot takes on the shape. For example, a narrower last means a narrower boot. The last is crucial to hiking or mountain boots fitting perfectly. A last that suits your feet prevents problems during hiking or mountaineering, such as blisters or pressure points.
However, Hanwag doesn’t just use one last in different sizes. Instead, we have anatomically shaped lasts for men and women. Alongside standard lasts, we use special lasts for different foot shapes and footwear categories. There are versions with different lasts for lots of our footwear models. The footwear’s name tells you whether it’s been made with special lasts and which type – e.g., Alaska Wide GTX.
