Over 150 precise steps go into every pair of double-stitched shoes.
The double-stitch construction is the oldest and most demanding technique in shoe-making. The upper – leather and lining – is stitched twice to the sole, creating shoes that are extremely durable, stable, and sustainable.
Since our founding in 1921, we have crafted genuinely double-stitched shoes by hand. Machines for this technique are now rarely produced, and many are as old as Hanwag itself. Only a few shoemakers worldwide still master this craft – and we are proud to be among them.
Extremely durable – wearable for decades with proper care.
Resoleable – sustainable and resource-friendly.
Stable & robust – perfect for hiking boots and everyday use.
Natural materials – high-quality leather, breathable linings, long-lasting soles.
How a Double-Stitched shoe is made
1. Stitching the upper:
The upper leather is connected to the lining and insole.
2. Shaping & Adding the Frame:
The leather is formed, excess trimmed, and the frame added.
3. Double Stitch:
A second, particularly strong stitch connects the upper, frame, and midsole.
